In the fall of 1943, after the capitulation of Italy, Istria briefly felt freedom. But the brutal response of the Nazi army soon arrives. German SS units and their allies launch “cleansing” operations in which about four hundred villages were burned, thousands of civilians were killed, and tens of thousands of people were taken to concentration camps.

The documentary report by author Martina Uzelac, through the testimonies of survivors, archival footage and historical research, reconstructs the year of terror that marked the lives of numerous Istrian families.

The stories of Foška Benčić and Đina Matošić, who as children witnessed burning homes and the loss of family members, reveal the personal dimension of wartime violence. Historians Igor Jovanović and Igor Šaponja, together with Vana Gović Marković, curator of the Lipa Remembers Memorial Center, place the events in a broader historical context, relying on documents, photographs and long-term research.
