    I’ve seen this play out with friends in the industry. A few years ago, Japan was the dream destination for the lifestyle and safety. Now, the math just doesn’t add up. If you’re a high skill worker, moving to Japan in 2026 feels like a financial step backward unless you’re working for a foreign multinational. It’s a shame because the culture is great, but you can’t pay rent with cool culture

    The only thing that motivates Japan to change is shame and loss of face. We saw it during the Meiji Restoration, after Eugene Smith’s Minamata photos appeared in LIFE magazine, after the BBC broke the Johnny’s scandal etc…

    Maybe the shame of seeing countries they long considered “beneath” Japan surpassing them in wages (and maybe in the future quality of life) could be that motivating factor.
