Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia presided over a memorial service on March 18, 2026, in the chapel of the Patriarchal Residence in Belgrade, honoring the late Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
The service was concelebrated by Archpriest-Stavrophor Đorđe Stojisavljević, head of the Patriarch’s office. Following the prayer, Patriarch Porfirije extended his condolences to the Locum Tenens of the Georgian Patriarchal Throne, the Holy Synod, clergy, monastics, and the faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In his message, he described Patriarch Ilia II as a “beloved brother” and “unforgettable father and archpastor” of the Georgian people. He emphasized that, although the Church mourns, it does not grieve without hope, but looks toward the Resurrection and eternal life.
The Serbian Patriarch highlighted the late Patriarch’s profound spiritual legacy, noting that his life bore abundant fruit and left an enduring impact not only on his flock but throughout the Orthodox world. He also praised his role in strengthening faith, preserving tradition, and nurturing the spiritual identity of the Georgian people.
Concluding, Patriarch Porfirije prayed that Christ grant rest to the soul of Patriarch Ilia II “in the dwellings of the righteous,” and expressed the wish that his memory remain eternal.
