That screenshot is still hilarious
I thought this was gone years ago
a shittier version of Roblox in VR who would have thought
Man, remember that brief window between crypto and AI when the Metaverse was supposed to be the next big technology? I’ve never seen a landlord so obviously in search of tenants. The whole craze seemed to exist because it would be really good for tech companies if we all had to pay rent on the digital offices and hangout spaces and stores they created, but the organic need or demand for any of that never existed in the first place.
So much money wasted on a product that quite literally nobody but Zuckerberg himself asked for.
Billions well spent
Glad to see Zuck doesn’t just buy and shutdown indie dev companies. He also spends millions on internal stuff then shuts it down.
*dan olson takes a drink*
And nothing of value was lost.
Roblox did it with amazing success. Meta couldn’t even come close and they changed their entire company brand for it. Such a weird fucking company.
Lol “The future”
it launched?
I just got back into using my Oculus Quest 2 and went to the Horizon Central thing last night.
Holy shit it’s just all kids. I felt like I was the only adult there. I like the idea of social interaction in something like this, and am able to get a little bit of it from the BigScreen app.
A native social app is a great idea, but when you’re putting stupid little games in it like “steal a brainrot” or whatever else, you’re bringing in the wrong crowd.
Give us bars, couches, bowling alleys. Just somewhere to chill.
Is Second Life still around?
But i thought this was the future of technology
We had VRML in the late 90’s and I thought it was stupid then. This wasn’t much better
Lmao looks like a wii character.
It would be easier to just buy VrChat at the time
Making room for The Oasis right? …..Right?
This was the “killer app” and the reason why Facebook brought Oculus. Horizon Worlds shutting down most likely means the end of VR invesment for Facebook, or at least end the subsidy from Quest devices.
Next Quest, wherever is not cancelled, will be expensive as hell.
Meanwhile, Second Life is still up.
NOOOOO don’t close it! 😀
Keep it going! Because it cost them money! 😀
Let them bleed.
What will they name themselves now???
Wow! What a huge loss for humanity.
Fuck Zuckerberg and all these tech grifters. Actively making the world worse with their nonsense and greed.
Wait… They actually made this? I thought it was an idea/proposal that got scrapped because no one cared or it looked dumb. I had NO idea they actually went through with it.
I’m honestly surprised it lasted this long.
They literally changed the name of the entire fucking company just for this product to completely fail, amazing. Good one Zuck
My kids both have a meta quest 3s, they love them and play them daily, they have never touched meta horizon worlds
Dang. I totally thought this had already been shut down, I’d forgotten about it
What is that like 75+ billion down the drain? This level of waste can only be outdone by the government, both feel like that obnoxious person you can tell has never been punched in the face.
This garbage was absolute evil, good riddance and may it never come back.
I will not ever touch anything to do with Meta.
And he was rewarded with a little baby down turn before returning to ATHs
VRChat IS the closest thing there is to a metaverse, and I pray to God Zucks doesn’t try to buy it out 🙏
Goodbye dear legless world, we hardly knew ye.
Honestly I’m a bit surprised it lasted this long. I talk to a lot of tech people, and absolutely no one was ever talking about anything to do with this.
My dad (developer) told me that essentially it was a licensing and money-pumping scheme, this whole MetaVerse thing. Being a dev and adding ANYTHING to it costs money. It cost money to upload. It costs money to interact. It costs maintenance fees to keep it up. So if you are a dev who wants to “try out” this risky new thing that is billed as the big, upcoming event to not miss/definitely be part of, you have to pay, and have to charge everyone who would use or interact with your addition.
He might have been taking liberties with hyperbole, but if that’s what it was like, again, I am surprised it stayed up for this long.
I didn’t even know it launched
It launched? I thought it was in development hell.
Huh. Well, whatever. Stupid idea.
cool, can we have the old Home area back now?
I’m surprised it lasted this long
Ah, some good news…
I guess you could say it didn’t have legs
Just think about if any regular person fked up this much. But because he is a billionaire and has an immense amount of power he can be allowed to fail.
Why now? Why not 5 years ago?
And nothing of value was lost.
So many billions wasted on the metaverse. Any normal company would throw out their CEO for this blunder.
I didn’t realize it had even launched.
Imagine having a budget of 80 billion and your tech demo still looks like an asset flipper
