Just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it can’t be done when it matters most.

Poland, the host of the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, had never won a medal in the 60 meters hurdles at the event. And with American superstars like Trey Cunningham there to challenge having just run a 7.3x in the semi-finals, it looked like that trend was about to continue.

But Jakub Szymanski didn’t limit himself, taking advantage of a fading Cunnningham to nab the first gold medal for the Polish home crowd. Check out our recap below.

Semi-finals

With eight spots available in the finals, the top two from each heat plus the next two fastest overall will advance.

Heat 1

It takes a lifetime best from Belocian to beat US champ Dylan Beard. It’s no matter, as they both advance. Jamaica’s Jerome Campbell trips over the penultimate hurdle and is disqualified.

1. Wilhem BELOCIAN (FRA), 7.42 Q=PB
2. Dylan BEARD (USA), 7.46 Q
3. Lorenzo Ndele SIMONELLI (ITA), 7.53
4. Damian CZYKIER (POL), 7.57
5. Asier MARTÍNEZ (ESP), 7.62
6. Michael OBASUYI (BEL), 7.62
7. Mondray BARNARD (RSA), 7.68
. Jerome CAMPBELL (JAM), DQ (TR22.6.2)

Heat 2

Trey Cunningham’s heat has a false start — it’s always tough to recall a 60mH, but the sensors show that Trajkovic of Cyprus jumped the gun. He is disqualified, but American Trey Cunningham is unbothered as he wins in a personal best 7.35. That’s a fantastic time — #3 all-time US behind Grant Holloway and Jakobe Tharp, who aren’t competing in Poland — that changes the perception about what was previously considered a relatively wide-open final.

1. Trey CUNNINGHAM (USA), 7.35 QPB
2. Demario PRINCE (JAM), 7.53 Q
3. Junxi LIU (CHN), 7.57
4. Jonáš KOLOMAZNÍK (CZE), 7.61 =PB
5. Romain LECOEUR (), 7.63
6. Louis François MENDY (SEN), 7.74
7. Elmo LAKKA (), 7.74
. Milan TRAJKOVIC (CYP), DQ (TR16.8)

Heat 3

The bubble time is 7.57. Polish fans cheer on their Jakub Szymanski, who wins the heat in 7.42 ahead of Spain’s Enrique Llopis. Japan’s Shusei Nomoto sets a 7.49-second national record to qualify on time along with Italy’s Lorenzo Simonelli from the first heat.

1. Jakub SZYMAŃSKI (POL), 7.42 Q
2. Enrique LLOPIS (ESP), 7.46 Q
3. Shusei NOMOTO (JPN), 7.49 NR
4. Franco LE ROUX (RSA), 7.55
5. Yuanjiang CHEN (CHN), 7.59 PB
6. Marcos HERRERA (ECU), 7.65
7. Saguirou BADAMASSI (NIG), 7.67
8. Thiago Resende ORNELAS DOS SANTOS (BRA), 7.68

Finals

A shocking update as Dylan Beard pulls out for medical reasons, having injured himself following the semi-finals. That leaves Trey Cunningham as the sole U.S. hope for a medal.

Cunningham got out well enough, but he couldn’t hold Poland’s Jakub Szymanski! It’s a blanket finish but Szymanski is the clear winner, Poland’s first, to the delight of the roaring crowds. Spain’s Enrique Llopis takes silver in a 7.42 national record while Cunningham holds on for bronze.

1. Jakub SZYMAŃSKI (POL), 7.40
2. Enrique LLOPIS (ESP), 7.42 NR
3. Trey CUNNINGHAM (USA), 7.43
4. Demario PRINCE (JAM), 7.43 PB
5. Wilhem BELOCIAN (FRA), 7.45
6. Shusei NOMOTO (JPN), 7.49 =NR
7. Franco LE ROUX (RSA), 7.51
8. Lorenzo Ndele SIMONELLI (ITA), 7.52
. Dylan BEARD (USA),  DNS
