HI PEOPLE.

My friend says that he has bought an only data sim! Are those cards really only data or they have a number?

data sims exist yes. they interally have a phone number but depending on the provider it’s blocked and you can really just browse the web with it

  2. They do have a phone number (in theory) but if they are set up as a data sim they either don’t support out or inbound calls or sms. Or even worse they allow calls and sms but at a per minute/per sms rate.

That being said this is Lyca mobile. Lyca Mobile is a virtual network operator on the O2 network.

Famously supporting phonecalls to other countries at competitive rates but Lyca mobile doesn’t support any modern calling standards. Even if you have a Lyca simcard that does support Calls with a flat. Or a contingent flat they don’t support voice over LTE (4G) or Voice over NR (5G) just plain old 2G which leads to phones shutting down any data when you call using the Lyca sim.

How do I know I tried them like a few weeks ago when they had the 8.99€/mth prepaid deal for 6 mths. And 260 GB.

And I was shocked that in the year 2026 there is still a phone provider that doesn’t support voLTE.

I would have switched my number to them but no voLTE is on my iPhone a deal breaker can’t afford to lose connection while navigating with my car over someone trying to call me 🙄. And the call quality on 2G is comparatively abysmal to VoLTE on Telekom or 1&1. to be fair as of now no MVNO supports Voice over NR but all (except Lyca) support at least either WiFi calling or voLTE

Your friend should be able to check this in the Lyca mobile app to which provisions and contingents his card is currently booked.
