Governor Kathy Hochul is backing measures that would weaken the deadlines surrounding the state’s climate law.

The Governor is proposing changes to how the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act calculates New York’s emissions, a move that could require less aggressive reductions, according to people familiar with the proposal.

She’s also proposing to delay the deadline for establishing regulations to meet the law’s goals until 2030, while keeping the original emissions deadlines in place.

The push reflects a broader shift among Democratic leaders nationwide, as they balance climate goals with concerns about affordability and rising energy costs.
