Foreign tourist: "Is this someone's property? Am I not allowed to take pictures here? I didn't know that. It was a beautiful place, so I took some photos."

Mayor Horiuchi: "Using somebody's yard as a toilet. It sounds unbelievable, but it's actually happening. I can't believe it."

A visitor from Switzerland: "I heard it (sakura festival) was cancelled. It would have been wonderful to go to the cherry blossom festival, but it's sad that some tourists behave poorly."

"People should respect the country they are visiting, its people, and its traditions."

Local Resident: "When I opened the front door, there were foreigners sitting there eating. There were yakitori skewers and coffee cups they'd bought at a convenience store."

Local residents are saying that eating and drinking without permission and littering in front of their house entrance are commonplace.

At one house, tourists were constantly using the garden tap without permission, so the owner removed the faucet handle.

Hope the city won’t end up cutting down the trees to keep tourists from coming. Keep remembering Hokaido where they cut down the trees to keep tourists away.

  2. ‘Despite the cancellation…’

Such festivals are anyway mostly pointless and often don’t encompass much more than a few decorations and food stalls. Cancelling the festival would have made me more likely to visit (if I was planning to be in the area).

Stronger action (i.e. closing and barricading the park) is needed if they actually seriously want visitors (including domestic tourists and locals) to stop going there.

  3. I think it just got more well known after the news of the cancellation, The news was all over the weeb groups and news pages. For the people that understood that it was just the stalls and promotions that were cancelled, probably took it as a chance to get a picture with less people in the way.

“The only way to stop it is to make life harder for long-term foreign residents!” All of Japan: “Nods”.
