The European Parliament often decides on things that are important to the Internet, and the breach of messaging privacy in social apps is one of them. On March 11, the Parliament refused to extend the ban on message secrecy, but since the interior ministers of the European Union were not satisfied with it, a new vote is planned for March 26 under the leadership of the People’s Party.
In this regard, you could contact our deputies and remind them that in the European Parliament they do not only stand for their own or their faction’s interests, but for all our fundamental rights, which include the confidentiality of messages stipulated in §43 of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia:
The Constitution allows for exceptions to the secrecy of messages only with the permission of the court, and in essence, the parliament also set this condition for the automatic control of messages in communication apps on March 11. In fact, message secrecy is part of the basic values of democracy because it guarantees the autonomy of citizens. Without it, there is no competition of ideas, which is necessary for both a free market economy and free elections:
Let’s then remind our members of the European Parliament to protect the honor of their democratic institution and not let the interior ministers force them to change their minds simply because they want to monitor the messaging of more people while infringing on their basic rights. It was long past time to make this change, and it would be shameful if the European Parliament started eating its words now.
