President Iliana Iotova met with the newly elected leadership of the National Representation of Student Councils (NRSC) in Bulgaria, the president’s press secretariat said on Tuesday. A key focus of the meeting was the future of the National Student House in Sofia.
The sides rallied that the building should not become a hostage to private interests and should instead serve as a space for activities focused on the needs of the student community. The Vice President called on the NRSC to present a clear vision for the future of the building and emphasized that good communication with the executive branch is necessary to implement the idea.
“Turn the Student House into an institution, into a place for discussions, engage student clubs beyond Sofia as well. Do not turn it into an office building,” the President urged.
During the discussion, President Iotova and the representatives of the National Representation of Student Councils addressed a number of topics concerning young people’s education—from conditions in universities, high student fees, and the need for a larger scholarship budget, to the necessity of modernizing methods and technologies in higher education. The Council called on the state to commit to creating better conditions for sports in universities, where facilities are outdated despite existing interest in physical activities.
At the beginning of the month, a working meeting on the future of the National Student House was held at the Ministry of Education and Science. It was attended by representatives of the National Student House, the National Representation of Student Councils, as well as organizations that use the building.
