Meteorologists predict smoke from a nearby port fire could affect eastern Finland today. Officials urge residents to monitor air quality updates and follow safety guidance.
Finland warns of possible smoke from a fire at the Russian port Primorsk today. The information is based on meteorologists’ data and is being regarded by local authorities as a potential impact on air quality, experts say.
The fire at Primorsk port (the former town of Koivistö) continues into its third day following an attack by Ukrainian drones, which ignited several oil reservoirs. Primorsk port is the largest oil port on the Baltic, located about 50 kilometers from the Finnish border.
The cloud of smoke was visible on Finnish territory: in the second half of Tuesday afternoon, reporters recorded visibility near the settlements of Puuterlahti and Virolahti, near the Russian border.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns that due to cloudiness the smoke is unlikely to be visible in Finland, but at the same time suggests that the smoke may reach eastern Finland as early as today.
As weather conditions remain variable, Finnish services continue to monitor developments and will publish updates as needed. Further data on the cloud and its impact will be provided as needed.
