I think this shows weakness from Russia. They’ve gone from trying to take the whole of Ukraine to now saying «Please, just give us Donbas, and we’ll stop». Their demands are getting smaller and smaller, likely because they know this war is shifting in Ukraine’s favor. Russia is losing ground and hemorrhaging men. They need to stop the bleeding and they’re willing to pay an increasingly high price for that.
