Ski resort representatives have described the past season as successful overall, LETA reports.
Juris Stradiņš, owner of “Gaiziņkalns” in Madona municipality, noted that the past season was good. It wasn’t great, but compared to the previous season, it was incomparable.
He noted that December was much too warm, but in January and February the weather was cool enough for people’s comfort, while spring arrived quickly.
Later, once people had acclimated to the cold, the situation stabilised, he added.
Stradiņš stated that the ski season typically lasts through all of March and often continues into April, but this was not the case either this season or last. This is the main reason why the season cannot be considered ideal.
When asked about attendance, Stradiņš noted that visitor numbers were sufficient, events and competitions took place, and the turnout was very positive. Demand was higher than last year, even though the length of the season was similar in both years. The main difference was that there was a thaw in the middle of the previous season.
Representatives of “Riekstukalns” in Ķekava Municipality noted that this had been one of the most successful winter seasons in the entire history of “Riekstukalns,” as a winter without many thaws is a rarity in Latvia.
Representatives of the ski resort noted that demand, especially at the beginning of the season, was high. Following the previous short winter, visitors sought to take advantage of the opportunity and not miss out on the season, given the uncertainty of weather conditions. In their assessment, attendance was close to record levels.
When asked about the impact of the previous season on “Riekstukalns” operations, the resort’s representatives noted that, as one of the largest in the region, the resort would certainly continue operations even if there were another poor season. They noted that this would not be the first time there have been at least three consecutive poor seasons, but these are often followed by several good seasons that provide an opportunity to recover.
Representatives of “Milzkalns” in Tukums Municipality also noted that the winter season was successful, as ski trail operations depend on weather conditions and a winter without thaws is a significant benefit for the ski business.
“Milzkalns” representatives stated that demand, especially at the start of the season, was high. They noted that ski trail operations and visitor numbers are closely tied to weather conditions. Overall, attendance was consistent with the season’s pattern: higher initially but later leveling off. Once visitors realized that winter was here to stay, they were able to choose a more convenient time to visit.
