Warsaw will increase spot checks at about 63 crossings to curb irregular migration and protect public order in the coming months.
The Polish government has decided to extend temporary border control at the borders with Germany and Lithuania until October 1.
By order of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the decision will take effect on April 5 and provides checks at about 63 border crossing points: about 50 at the border with Germany and 13 with Lithuania, with the involvement of border guards, police and the military.
Border control was introduced on July 7, 2025 and since then it has been extended several times.
Explanation and Legal Basis
“According to the Schengen Borders Code, a member state may restore border control at internal borders for a period of up to six months in the event of a foreseeable serious threat to public order or internal security”
– Polish Radio
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the extension of temporary control is linked to the persistence of a serious threat of illegal migration in both directions.
The agencies emphasize that the extension will not affect other aspects of migration policy and Schengen area regulations, and the control will be carried out in accordance with the existing norms.
The Border Guard Administration assures that this decision meets the need to ensure public safety at this stage of migration processes.
The anticipated step underscores Warsaw’s aim to maintain stable conditions at the borders with Germany and Lithuania, while also complying with the norms of the Schengen Space and legislative requirements.
