  1. Spending hundreds of millions on inefficient diesel buses that have design flaws just so you can mimic an older design for “patriotism points” is very BoJo. Glad they are finally going all electric.

  2. A double decker bus generally has a design life of 15 years, so they’d be starting to withdraw them around now regardless of any political pressure.

IIRC, single deckers only have a design life of 10 years, so if they were single deckers, they would have been gone 5 years ago!

Did you know that Boris did an interview after his premiership in which he talked about modelling red buses? It was a very specific question, and he gave a very specific rambling answer: “Oh yes, whoff whoff, model buses, I paint them red,” etc. The reason for this was that the most-searched Google term had been “Boris lied” and it was on red buses; this interview replaced that search. It was done by design, with thanks to Cambridge Analytica, who not only helped Boris but also Trump 1.0 and Obama.

Wonder where they will be sent, the buses that are far to old for the big cites usualy get another few years in a town or smaller city. It will be very strange seeing one of these running routes in Bedford or Swindon.

  5. I really liked the new routemasters, I’ll miss them when they’re gone. Used to get one to and from work every day on the 8.

Gotta be honest, can’t blame Boris for this. He doesn’t design the flaws in does he, and they did look very good and nostalgic, quite good for tourism I’d imagine.

It’s a pity because for all their impracticality it is a wonderfully sleek bit of design and a great improvement on what came before

  8. They were really nice and provided unique character to the central London. They would be missed.

  9. These buses are uncomfortable, they leak, they’re too hot, and have crazy amounts of dead space.

Other than that, a design classic.

Those busses are the WORST if you are not child sized. Absolutely hated them when i lived in London!
