WASHINGTON (TNND) — South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham said he encouraged President Donald Trump to “wind down” the war in Iran and seek peace.
“Just had a very good discussion with @POTUS about his recent statement regarding the consequences to Iran if they do not agree to an acceptable peace deal,” he wrote in a lengthy post on X. “I support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict consistent with our military objectives, but it takes two to tango.”
He said that Iran is a threat and he hopes a historic peace deal is made.
“Keep it up Mr President,” the post concluded. “Wind down the war and wind up efforts for an historic peace deal.”
Graham has gotten backlash from other lawmakers due to his previous rhetoric on the Iran war.
South Carolina GOP Rep. Nancy Mace said that Graham should be removed from the Situation Room due to previous comments about sending soldiers to fight in the Iran war.
“I don’t want to hear one word from a guy with no kids, desperately sending our sons and daughters into war on the ground in Iran,” Mace said.
Earlier this month, Graham said he was asking South Carolina to send its “sons and daughters” to fight in the Middle East.
“I’m going back to South Carolina, I am asking them to send their sons and daughters to the Mideast,” Graham said during a Fox News interview. “What I want you to do in the Mideast, my friends in Saudi Arabia and other places, step forward and say this is my fight too.”
Florida GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has also been critical of Graham’s rhetoric on the Iran war.

“I am deeply upset at the lack of respect for life Senator Lindsey Graham is displaying when talking about our troops,” she wrote on X. “He is acting as if they are expendable cattle.”
