Google says hackers linked to North Korea breached behind-the-scenes software in an effort to steal login information.
According to Google on Tuesday, the attackers embedded malicious code the previous day in an update to Axios, a program used to connect apps and web services.
Experts warned that if the malware gained control over a system’s data access permissions, it could lead to serious damage, including the theft of login credentials and additional data breaches.
The malicious code was discovered and removed within a day, though it remains unclear how widely the compromised software was downloaded.
Google attributed the attack to UNC1069, a group believed to have been active since at least 2018 and known for targeting the cryptocurrency and financial sectors.
