North Korea’s Kim Il Sung University has changed the name of its information science department to the artificial intelligence(AI) department, in an apparent bid to foster talent in the global race for dominance in AI technology.

According to the school’s website on Wednesday, the name change took place in July last year, with the renamed department offering majors such as AI, information science, information and communication, and programming.

The school, considered the country’s top university, offers courses on “deep learning applications” and “cloud calculation,” among others, as core courses in its AI department.

These names appear to refer to areas such as deep learning, machine running, data mining and cloud computing.

North Korean media had, on several occasions, reported on the achievements made by the university’s AI department.

In November, the AI research institute under the department was selected as one of the top ten information technology companies of 2025 for its contributions to the development of an integrated production system for aquaculture facilities in the city of Sinpo and the county of Nagwon.
