April 2 – In a prestigious ceremony held just one day after their hard-fought World Cup playoff match against Turkey, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani (pictured), officially decorated the National Football Team with the Presidential Medal of Merits.
Despite the narrow 0-1 defeat, President Osmani emphasised that the team’s performance remains one of the most dignified representations of the state on the global stage, asserting that the players remain on the “highest pedestal of our Republic for the pride you have brought to our people.”
During her address, she noted that the decoration serves as recognition for their successful journey to the final qualifying phase and their role as an inspiration for future generations, stating:
“On behalf of the state and all citizens, we thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for our country; your contribution is an inseparable part of our sporting history.”
Accepting the honour on behalf of the football community, Football Federation of Kosovo (FFK) President Agim Ademi described the award as the most precious medal the team could receive, as it comes directly from the people.
“We may not have reached the World Cup, but we won the hearts of our state,” Ademi remarked, highlighting the vital importance of institutional support and the President’s constant presence through both triumphs and setbacks. He expressed his firm belief that Kosovo’s journey is far from over, adding that he remains confident that one day the moment will come when we receive a medal from the European Championship.
The emotional weight of the journey was further echoed by team captain Vedat Muriqi, who spoke candidly about the pain of the recent loss and his pride in leading the squad. “To be honest, we didn’t believe we would lose; I didn’t even book a return ticket,” Muriqi shared, reflecting on the team’s determination to make the dream of qualification a reality.
While expressing his disappointment at missing the chance to lead the team to the tournament in America, he remained optimistic about the talent within the squad. “We have shown that if we continue this journey together, we can overcome any battle. A golden generation is coming, and I hope our next meeting will be to celebrate a successful qualification for a European or World Cup,” the captain concluded.
This presidential recognition underscores the team’s significant impact on Kosovo’s international identity and the enduring hope for the nation’s footballing future.
