POULSBO, WA (Amazing America) — You don’t have to leave the country to get a taste of Norway.

Scandinavian culture and cuisine are alive and thriving in the small waterfront city of Poulsbo, Washington.

Amazing America’s Anthony and Marlie Love spent the day in “Little Norway.”

Founded in 1886 by Norwegian immigrant Jørgen Eliason, Poulsbo is about 90 minutes from Seattle and has a population of about 13,000. It first gained notoriety as a must-stop spot during the 1962 World’s Fair — the same fair that brought us the Space Needle.

Many of its buildings and shops still reflect a Nordic style. Early settlers chose the area because it resembled the climate back home.

Visitors can take a trip to Norway by strolling through its historic downtown. Front Street is lined with shops, museums, and a waterfront boardwalk, all influenced by Scandinavian culture.

Any day trip to Poulsbo should include a stop at Sluys Bakery, home to the famous Poulsbo Bread that is now sold across the country.

And remember, after you fill up on good eats, enjoy a stroll around the marina, go boating, or even kayaking.

This small, cozy coastal city offers a taste of Norway right here in the U.S, no passport required. Are there any cities or towns in your state that have a European flair? Tell us about them in the comments below.
