As of April 2, baseball is 6-0 in the Big South Conference with an overall 21-9 record, softball is 7-2 in the conference with an overall 22-16 record and lacrosse is 1-2 in the conference with an overall 6-5 record.
Baseball
Winthrop 5, Charleston Southern 4
The Winthrop Eagles remained undefeated in the Big South Conference with their third win against the Buccaneers at home on March 29. Up to the fifth inning, it looked like Charleston Southern’s might take the win, but Winthrop rallied in the latter half. of the game. Winthrop forced a 10th inning and scored one more run with a walk-off sacrifice fly to win the game.
Junior infielder Corey Wouters ended the game with four RBIs, two hits and a run.
Winthrop 5, College of Charleston 15
The Eagles fell to the Cougars in a 10 run blowout loss at home on March 31. The game was one-sided from the beginning with Winthrop giving up six runs in the first inning. Winthrop put up a few runs in the middle of the game but collapsed again in the seventh inning, giving up six more runs to put the win out of reach.
Game leaders included junior infielder Corey Wouters who had three RBIs, three hits and one run, and senior outfielder Alan Benhardt with one RBI and two hits.
Winthrop 7, Western Carolina 15
In their second loss in a row, the Eagles fell to the Catamounts by eight runs at home on April 2. Both teams started the game hot, scoring at least five runs each by the end of the third inning. After the fifth inning, Winthrop’s offense failed to score additional runs, which allowed Western Carolina to blow past them in another blowout loss.
Junior infielder Noah Cox ended the game with two runs and three hits while sophomore outfielder and infielder Josh Skowronski had one RBI, two hits and a run.
The baseball team will play their next two games of a three-game series against Western Carolina at home on April 3 at 6 p.m. and April 4 at 2 p.m.
Softball
Winthrop 4, UNC Greensboro 2
The Eagles beat the Spartans in a home game on March 31. Winthrop played an efficient defensive game and prevented UNC Greensboro from scoring in four straight innings. The Spartans’ run late in the sixth inning wasn’t enough, and Winthrop was victorious.
Junior outfielder Tia Beckham had one RBI, run and hit in the game while senior infielder Grayson Buckner had two RBIs and one hit.
The softball team’s next game will be at home against Wofford College on April 8 at 6 p.m.
Lacrosse
Winthrop 15, Radford 10
In a hard-fought away game, the Eagles triumphed against the Highlanders on April 1. Throughout much of the game, the score was kept close with several lead changes. By halftime, the teams were tied at seven goals each.
In the third quarter, Winthrop scored four back-to-back goals, giving them the lead. In the final quarter, Winthrop broke away and scored four more goals while Radford scored none, earning the victory.
Senior attack Tori Iannotti led the game with five goals. Junior attack Emily Hollinger aided in the win with three goals and one assist.
The lacrosse team’s next game will be at home against Gardner-Webb at noon on April 4, which is also the team’s Senior Day game.
