MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – 13 NEWS spoke to Sen. Jerry Moran about his thoughts on the Iran War, in the wake of Friday’s reports of American fighter jets being shot down over the region.
“There’s a huge consequence to being in battle. There are things we need to do to protect ourselves, the fear of Iran having nuclear capabilities is one of them, but more information would tell us more about whether we’re doing the right thing at the right time.”
Sen. Moran says Americans have typically exhibited frustration over wars the nation engaged in, when the overarching idea isn’t clear.
“In our country’s history, it is hugely important for the American people to have an understanding and an ultimate buy-in on our military endeavors around the globe. Otherwise, we get tired of the circumstance, we don’t understand what’s going on. It means that we don’t always complete our mission.”
The senator urged defense officials to be more transparent in their intentions behind the conflict that has now stretched on over a month.
“We need, I as an elected official, need more information from the Dept. of Defense about what is going on. What is transpiring now, what are the plans for the future.”
“My request would be come and tell Congress, tell me as a member of Congress, so we can have a conversation with Kansans about what this means. That means a much more in-depth conversation. My view is, while I’ve had some briefings in classified settings, I’d love to see those sessions occur in a public setting so that Kansans, my constituents, can hear what I’ve heard.”
Sen. Moran’s discussion occurred while answering questions at an event celebrating funding for Kansas State University’s Veterinary School.
