Estonia proposes stricter sanctions to curb Iran’s shadow fleet and protect shipping routes, while warning that energy disruptions benefit Russia’s war effort.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna believes that to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, additional sanctions against Iran are needed, which could intensify pressure on regional players and ensure more stable maritime routes.

The head of the foreign policy department said this during a discussion on the security of the sea route, expressing Estonia’s position on strengthening international measures in the region.

The country is ready to support all initiatives that strengthen maritime security and contribute to stability at the regional and global levels.

“One of the effective measures could be to tighten sanctions pressure on Iran and decisively halt the activities of Iran’s ‘shadow fleet’.”

He stressed that restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz also matters in the context of Russia’s full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine.

“Current oil prices and disruptions to energy supplies in the Middle East are working in Russia’s favor. This allows it to gain additional profits that can be used to continue aggression against Ukraine. This must be brought to an end, and pressure on Russia must be intensified”

The minister added that discussions and joint work with international partners to unblock the Strait of Hormuz continue with the aim of ensuring long-term stability in the region and the security of sea routes.
