Basic information: Lovro Dobričević, Christ and the donor, 1460, tempera on board, 51.8 x 27.8 cm.
Image description:
The most precise visual expression of late medieval piety, the Imago pietatis (Latin image of compassion), is the most immediate of all devotional images. Christ is shown most often in a three-quarter or half-length figure, with an erect body, but with prominent wounds that are still bleeding, his head is often tilted to the side and crowned with a crown of thorns, and his hands are lowered, crossed in front of the body or spread by the sides. This painting is specific because it shows Christ in full height, and next to him is the figure of the donor, who is traditionally recognized as the Bosnian king Stjepan Tomaš. His cult was nurtured by the Bosnian Franciscans from whose monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska the painting originates. Imago pietatis is a purely devotional image that does not depict a specific event, it is an image of the Redeemer who participates equally in life and death. It symbolizes his dual nature, depicting him as dead and yet alive.
