On this day 47 years ago today, the basketball club Bosna became the champion of Europe, after defeating the Italian Emerson Varese in the grand final in Grenoble.
On April 5, 1979, “Students” became the first club from the former Yugoslavia to win the title of champion of the old continent. It was Varese’s tenth consecutive final in the Champions Cup, while Bosnia participated for the first time.
The greatest success in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. basketball was achieved by: Delibašić, Varajić, Vučević, Benaček, Đogić, Bosiočić, Izić, Radovanović, Hadžić, Pešić, while Tanjević led the team from the bench.
Žarko Varajić scored an incredible 45 points in that match and set a record in the Champions Cup and Euroleague finals, and Mirza Delibašić added 30 points.
The champions of Europe were welcomed in Sarajevo a day later by around 15,000 fans.
