SACKETS HARBOR, New York (WWNY) – The village of Sackets Harbor and its chamber of commerce are speaking out about a business owner’s decision to refuse service to U.S. border czar Tom Homan.
Alex Morgia, who owns a marina and hotels in Sackets, said last week that he was uncomfortable having his businesses associated with the direction federal enforcement has taken.”
He confirmed that he told Homan he wasn’t renewing the border czar’s boat slip this season and that he will no longer host Homan’s security detail at his hotels.
Morgia is also the village’s mayor. He said it was a personal and business decision.
The village issued the following statement:
“The Village of Sackets Harbor is aware of the recent public discussion regarding a decision made by Mayor Alex Morgia in connection with his private business and his choice not to engage in business with Tom Homan.
We recognize that this matter has generated strong opinions and concerns within our community and beyond. We value the engagement of our residents and respect the diverse perspectives being expressed.
It is important to clarify that this situation involves a personal business decision made outside the scope of official Village duties. The operations, services, and decision-making processes of the Village of Sackets Harbor remain independent and continue to be carried out in accordance with established policies, laws, and the best interests of the community.
Village staff and officials remain focused on maintaining the delivery of essential services, supporting our residents and local businesses, and upholding the standards of professionalism and accountability expected by the public.
We encourage community members to continue sharing their feedback through appropriate and respectful channels. The Village remains committed to transparency, open communication, and serving all members of our community.”
The Sackets Harbor Chamber of Commerce issued this statement:
“As a Chamber of Commerce, we are apolitical. No single position reflects that of our membership or village as a whole with numerous individual member statements reflecting that diversity of viewpoint. This matter is one for individuals to discuss on their own and we encourage them to do so with respect for opposing views. We remain open to any and all visitors as we always have been.”
