Forty Auchan Romania stores now source 60% of their electricity from renewable energy resources as part of the retailer’s green transition.

The retailer highlighted that nine additional store have transitioned to renewable energy within the past eight months.

Renewable energy has been integrated across Auchan and ATAC hypermarkets and supermarkets, as well as the company’s headquarters in Bucharest, Romania.

Auchan aims to transition to 100% renewable energy across its operations by 2030.

Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE)

In early 2023, Auchan launched its Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE) initiative, which oversees the procurement and supply of renewable energy for the company’s locations.

In addition, the retailer has invested in internal renewable energy production by installing solar panel systems at 16 of its hypermarkets.

Further photovoltaic systems generate renewable energy at Auchan’s logistics facilities, supporting the company’s sustainability efforts.

Cristian Drăghici, director at Auchan Renewable Energy, said, “By combining our own production with an integrated procurement and supply model, we are not only able to increase the share of renewable energy but also gain better control over consumption and costs.”

Expansion

Auchan currently supplies 40 stores in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Brașov, Iași, Constanța, Craiova, Galați, Oradea, Pitești, Sibiu, Bacău, and Suceava with renewable energy, with further gradual transitions planned across its network.

Drăghici, noted, “The rapid expansion of Auchan Renewable Energy confirms that energy can become a strategic pillar of retail operations.

“The fact that we have reached 40 powered locations in less than a year demonstrates this model’s ability to scale efficiently nationwide.”

The retailer operates more than 500 stores across Romania and generated a turnover of more than €1.7 billion in 2024.

In September 2025, Auchan expanded its Simply by Auchan franchise to 50 stores across 14 counties in Romania.
