An Estonian minister warned that robust security guarantees are essential for Ukraine’s survival. He added that NATO membership must remain possible and not be dictated by Russia.
Ukraine must receive reliable security guarantees, and its accession to the North Atlantic Alliance must remain possible, said Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
(U.S. President Donald) Trump clearly stated that he does not support Ukraine’s accession to NATO at this moment. However, this option should remain open for the future. It cannot be dictated by Putin
– Margus Tsahkna
According to Tsahkna, Ukraine already plays a significant role in security matters: it has almost a million servicemembers with many years of combat experience, strong innovations, and growing defense capabilities.
Security guarantees must work in both directions. Ukraine will not only receive guarantees but will also contribute to European security. If peace is achieved, Russia will have to think carefully before moving forces to NATO’s borders, since Ukraine will be part of this security system. Ukraine has already demonstrated its willingness to fight for freedom
– Margus Tsahkna
Ukraine is officially on an irreversible path to NATO membership, which was confirmed at the Washington Summit in 2024. However, there is currently no consensus among all alliance members on an immediate invitation.
Ukraine will become a member when the conditions mature and there is the Allies’ consent
– Mark Rutte
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty late in 2025, stressed that Ukraine will become a member when the conditions truly mature and when the Allies agree to such a decision.
Prospects for accession and the role of the Allies
Thus, Ukraine’s path to full NATO membership remains open, but its realization depends on consensus among partner countries and concrete steps to bolster security.
