Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday congratulated his Iranian counterpart over the temporary ceasefire announced between Tehran and Washington.
During a phone call with President Masoud Pezeshkian, “views were exchanged on issues related to bilateral cooperation,” according to a statement by Azerbaijan’s presidency.
The Iranian president thanked Aliyev for the humanitarian assistance sent to the country, the statement said.
US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that all attacks on Iran will be stopped for two weeks.
The announcement came less than two hours before a deadline Trump had set for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept an agreement or face what he described as the destruction of “a whole civilization.”
Regional tensions escalated after the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,400 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
Tehran also restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which it has agreed to reopen as part of the ceasefire deal.
Earlier Wednesday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that Baku welcomed the ceasefire agreement.
“We call on the parties to engage in a constructive dialogue aimed at resolving existing issues and building mutual trust. Azerbaijan remains ready to support initiatives aimed at strengthening lasting peace, security, and cooperation in the region,” the ministry said in a statement.
