Three people have been jailed following an armed robbery on a food delivery driver in Malta late last month.
The attack took place on 31 March at approximately 9.30pm, when a motorcyclist delivering an order was approached and assaulted by two individuals as he reached his destination.
The court heard that the assailants were armed with a knife. They stole cash from the driver along with the items he was delivering – reportedly a quantity of vapes and tobacco.
Police arrested two suspects, Janalaise Camilleri, 19, and Elhadi Ammar, 24, at their residence in St Paul’s Bay on 7 April. Both initially pleaded not guilty to all charges.
However, investigations revealed that the delivery order had been placed from Camilleri’s own account, leading prosecutors to argue the attack was pre-planned.
A third individual, a minor, was also identified as having been involved. Her role was to remain in communication with the driver while the other two carried out the assault.
Appearing before Magistrate Tanya Sammut on Thursday, Camilleri and Ammar pleaded not guilty and requested bail. The minor pleaded guilty to all charges and also sought release from arrest.
All three were refused bail.
In the case of the minor, the court ordered she be held at the Young Offenders Rehabilitation Service. The magistrate noted she lacked a stable family environment and a fixed address, often spending short periods living with friends.
The court heard that her father was frequently absent, while her mother had drug problems and was expected to begin a rehabilitation programme. The magistrate was not convinced the minor could be granted bail without a secure and fixed residence.
Janika Bugeja appeared for Camilleri, while Nicholas Mifsud represented the minor. Warren Galea led the prosecution.
