Momentum has called out Robert Abela over the handling of a man linked to notorious Mafia boss Totò Riina, raising serious questions about how he was able to live and operate in Malta despite an international arrest warrant.

The case centres on Antonino Ciavarello, Riina’s son-in-law, who relocated to Malta and lived in Buġibba before moving to Mosta.

Italian authorities issued an international arrest warrant against him in January 2022 for alleged Mafia-related activities.

In a press release, Momentum said no immediate action appeared to have been taken by the Malta Police Force.

The party also pointed out that Ciavarello was granted a Maltese identity card weeks after the warrant was issued, as well as a VAT number linked to a Malta-registered company.

Ciavarello remained in Malta for around two years before being arrested in February 2024.

Arnold Cassola described the situation as “extremely serious”, arguing that authorities failed to act decisively and allowed circumstances that enabled him to evade justice.

Momentum is calling for full transparency and accountability from the government over how the case was handled.

Should there be an investigation?
