Cyprus, currently holding the presidency of the European Council, intends to achieve its previously stated goal of completing the allocation of EUR 90 billion to Ukraine as part of a reparations loan, as well as introducing the 20th package of sanctions against Russia following the defeat of incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party in Hungary’s parliamentary elections and the victory of the Tisza party led by Peter Magyar.
“As noted earlier, the goal of our presidency is the swiftest possible completion of both the EUR 90 billion loan package for Ukraine and the 20th sanctions package. We intend to place this issue on the agenda of the Committee of Permanent Representatives as soon as conditions allow, with the aim of completing the consideration of both matters as quickly as possible,” an official representative of Cyprus told journalists in Brussels on Monday.
As reported, the decision to allocate the EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine and introduce the 20th sanctions package in connection with the war Russia is waging against Ukraine was previously blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Brussels is optimistic about future cooperation with Budapest following the victory of Magyar’s party in the parliamentary elections held this Sunday.
