Douglas County Health Department and “I Be Black Girl” are partnering up in honor of the 10th Annual Black Maternal Health Week. For the past decade, from April 11-17, the week has been dedicated to raising awareness about health disparities and maternal health outcomes. According to the 2024 Douglas County Health Assessment, from 2018 to 2020, an annual average of 5.8 Douglas County infants died per 1,000 live births. In the metro, an average of 11.7 Black infants died per 1,000 live births. Douglas County Health Department Division Chief Jamin Johnson said, “There’s not a family that is not impacted by it (maternal health challenges). It doesn’t matter what your social background or economic status is.” Johnson said their family nearly lost his wife and son during delivery. Adding, “That is the reason that I am passionate about this.” I Be Black Girl is hosting multiple events throughout Black Maternal Health Week, including a “Diaper & Wipe Drive.” All supplies support IBBG’s communitywide baby shower.
