Full post:
Yesterday, at the reception organized in honor of Congressman Eliot Engel, I had the pleasure of meeting with President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who came to offer their condolences.
We spoke about the precious Albanian-American friendship and recalled the late 90s, when, together with Congressman Engel and many of our friends in Washington, we worked day and night for the freedom and independence of Kosovo. President Clinton told me how, at that time, Congressman Engel was exerting constant pressure on his administration on the issue of Kosovo and emphasized that we were fortunate that, together, we managed to make a difference for the people of Kosovo. I thanked President Clinton on behalf of our nation for standing by us, ending the Serbian regime of Milosevic and liberating Kosovo.
Without our friends in Washington, Kosovo would not be where it is today: a free and independent state.
At this condolence reception, I also met with family and honored friends of Congressman Engel, such as Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Albanian-American businessman Lewis Gjelaj, John and Maria Calvelli, Bill Weitz, journalist and publisher of the newspaper “Illyria”, Vehbi Bajrami, and many others.
With his extraordinary work, Congressman Engel has entered the hearts of many people around the world. We, Albanians, were fortunate to have a friend like him—a strong and unwavering voice at the most crucial moments of our history.
God bless Congressman Engel, the Engel family, the American people, and the Albanian people.
