F1 will be back on the big screen in 2027 with a new film featuring Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper.
This time it’s a prequel, but not to the Oscar-winning Brad Pitt vehicle. Instead, the next Formula 1 flick will be an origins movie for the Oceans heist franchise. Indeed, the film is believed to be titled, simply, Oceans, and features Robbie and Cooper as Danny Ocean’s parents.
“Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows—his parents,” Robbie revealed at CinemaCon, as reported by Variety. “You’ll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”
On Sunday June 3rd, 1962 22 F1 cars lined up on streets of Monte Carlo for the 20th Monaco Grand Prix. In P1 was Jim Clark, with the first pole position of his career, for Lotus. Graham Hill in his BRM was alongside, while Bruce McLaren’s Cooper-Climax and Willy Mairesse’s Ferrari made up the second row.
The start was chaotic, with Mairesse reaching turn one first, then out-braking himself, which led to a pile up behind. Dan Gurney (Porsche), Richie Ginther (BRM), and Maurice Trintignant (Lotus) all crashed out as a result. Tragically, race marshal Ange Baldoni was killed when he was hit by a wheel from Ginther’s BRM.
It’s exactly this kind of turmoil that the Oceans crew could exploit, if screenwriter Carrie Solomon (A Family Affair) has studied her F1 history. Or perhaps Robbie and Cooper will go after the trophy won by Bruce McLaren after 100 laps of the tight and twisty 1.9-mile street circuit.
Cooper is also taking on director duties, while Robbie is a producer, and in other Oceans news George Clooney is set to bring back the original Oceans Eleven crew of Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle in a planned sequel.
In the meantime, here’s a reminder of the glitz and glamour of the Formula 1 race that the Oceans are set to disrupt.
