At a meeting of the Saeima Budget and Finance (Tax) Committee on Thursday, April 16, members of parliament supported the draft Saeima resolution on providing support for the issuance of a short-term state loan to the national airline “airBaltic”. This issue is expected to be considered at today’s Saeima session.
The meeting of the Saeima Budget and Finance Committee was initially partially closed but later continued in open session. During the session, Transport Minister Atis Švinka, a member of the Progressives party, confirmed that he assumes political responsibility for the loan-granting process, its oversight, and repayment.
The minister noted that he himself will monitor the use of the loan and the repayment process. At the same time, opposition MPs repeatedly asked whether he would resign if the money was not recovered. Švinka told the media that he is prepared to resign.
Meanwhile, MP Edgars Putra of the “United List” stated in the committee that, although it is publicly claimed that the coalition is continuing its work, it is evident from the session that there is still no consensus within it. United List will not participate in this vote and will not support it in the Saeima.
