A group of delegates from the National Assembly of Armenia recently completed a trip to Georgia, which included a visit to Newnan.
The group visited the state of Georgia from March 27 to April and toured the state assembly and the Central Educational Center, among other stops.
Mariam Poghosyam, a member of the delegation, said the experience was great for the visitors.
During the visit, Poghosyam said she and the other delegates met their counterparts at the Georgia state legislature.
It ended up being the most interesting part of the trip, she said.
“We met a lot of people and got acquainted with the way of governance in the U.S., which is different from ours,” she said. “We really appreciate it. As for Georgia, we lived here with our host families. They treated us very well. We’re impressed with the way of life, so it’s a really good experience for us.”
Poghosyam said the delegates met with the mayors of Decatur and Newnan and discussed forming sister city relationships with cities in Armenia.
Janie Lore, president of the council of the Friendship Force of Greater Atlanta, who worked on bringing the delegation to the U.S., said she suggested the delegation visit CEC to see the educational opportunities Coweta students have.
“Because of the way the internships are structured and apprenticeships, they were interested in developing more of those kinds of things within their educational system,” she said. “The technology is so advanced with what we do with high school students, and it really challenges them to start early with career education and provides opportunities for students.”
Flags from international visitors are displayed at CEC, Lore said. After the visit from the delegation, an Armenian flag was added to the lobby.
