Carbon County, Wyo. – Near the town of Medicine Bow a team of Swiss paleontologists found a rare fossil of a juvenile Dino they are calling “Lucy.”
Wyoming News Now spoke with the Aathal Dinosaur Museum’s Director & Curator as they provided the rundown on this extraordinary find.Â
Aathal Dinosaur Museum Yolanda Schicker states, “we did some research on that and we found out it’s over 100 years ago since the last one of a kind like that was found.”
Every summer an excavation team from the Aathal Dinosaur Museum, located near Zurich, Switzerland makes a trip out to Wyoming, where work is done in the leased Meilyn Quarry, which contains rock layers from the Jurassic Period.
Well two summers ago they came across the discovery of “Lucy” which the team initially sent back to Aathal thinking it was nothing “too special” but once they got to examining it this year it came with intriguing results.
“When he opened more and more and he he discovered all these pieces, one bone after the other came out. So we were so excited to have the whole row of teeth and, yeah, what an amazing find,” explains Schicker.
Lucy is a young long-necked dinosaur belonging to the Camarasaurus group, and is said to be one of the most complete fossils of its kind ever discovered, and once the team realized, joy and excitement ran throughout the members.
Wyoming has been in the Dino spotlight as of recently, but Aathal Dinosaur Museum Director Yolanda Schicker says there’s more to it than just going out and digging for fossils.
Schicker adds, “so far we were very lucky, but also experienced, I would say, because we are doing that since a very long time and we know where to dig and where to expect something.”
Schicker says another baby Camarasaurus was also found near the area, which they call “Lenny,” telling WNN the fossils named “Lenny” and “Lucy” share the names of her kids.
