PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu declared on Saturday that President NicuÈ™or Dan ‘sees and understands very well his constitutional role’ as mediator.

‘Nicusor Dan sees and understands very well the constitutional role, that of mediator. If you go and take a political side of one party or another, it means that you are going beyond the constitutional limits of a president. Which President Nicusor Dan has not done so far, and that is a good thing,’ stated Sorin Grindeanu, in a press conference.

Asked by journalists how he comments on the head of state’s statement that the PSD had caused a crisis, the social-democratic leader replied: ‘I have not seen such a statement and if it had been this statement, I do not understand what it refers to. We have made things as transparent and clear as possible. Last year we heard an obsessive word: ‘deficit’. From morning to evening it was about the deficit. Now, for about a week, two and I am convinced that we will hear and in the next two, three weeks we will hear another obsessive word, namely ‘stability’, let’s not ruin stability. Stability is good, if it gives you prosperity. That is not the case. If things are not going in a good direction and that is what 80% of Romanians say (…) then you have to do something, change, try to direct the direction towards a good target. I think that’s what responsibility means.’

Grindeanu mentioned that stability can come quickly, ‘if there is goodwill.’

‘Having stability, just for the sake of stability, I don’t think it’s a target you should necessarily pursue. If that stability would bring prosperity, obviously you have no reason to ruin that arrangement. That’s not the case. But this stability can return very quickly, if there is goodwill and if a political consensus is quickly found,’ the PSD chairman said.

President Nicusor Dan admitted on Thursday that, at this moment, PSD is violating the governing coalition protocol by requesting a change of prime minister before the government rotation in April 2027.

In an interview with Europa FM, the head of state was asked if he didn’t think that PSD was the one who caused a political crisis because it violated the agreement signed last year that said Ilie Bolojan would be prime minister until the government rotation in April 2027.

‘It is an agreement that PSD is currently violating. I agree with that,’ said Nicusor Dan.AGERPRES (RO – writing by: Otilia Halunga, editing by: Catalin Alexandru; EN – writing by: Catalin Cristian Trandafir)
