A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, was reported 34 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday, April 19th, 2026, at 10:04 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Romania’s National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) at magnitude 4.4, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.6, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) at magnitude 4.7, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.6, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.4, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Koutsounari (pop. 570) located 17 km from the epicenter, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 20 km away, Kentri (pop. 1000) 22 km away, Gra Liyia (pop. 1,500) 23 km away, and Nea Anatoli (pop. 1000) 25 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) located 39 km from the epicenter, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 44 km away, Neapoli (pop. 2,700) 50 km away, and Irakleion (pop. 137,200) 84 km away.
