Warsaw is weighing a sensitive decision that could set a regional precedent. Officials are quietly mapping possible routes while details remain classified.
In Warsaw, Slovakia’s request for the overflight of the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s plane through Polish airspace en route to Moscow is being considered, and a potential route is currently being assessed.
This was reported by a spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maciej Wevur. According to him, official statements confirm that the matter is under consideration, but details of the decision have not been disclosed at this time.
Earlier Slovakia did not receive permission to fly through the airspace of the Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Last year Fico was forced to undertake a lengthy flight to Moscow on May 9, routing via Hungary, Romania, and the Black Sea after the Baltic states and Poland refused.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga expressed gratitude to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania for denying the use of their airspace for Fico’s visit to Russia.
Subsequently, Estonia also announced a ban on the use of its airspace by Fico’s government aircraft; the situation remains under the attention of the relevant services.
Current situation and next steps
There is no final decision yet on the overflight, but the matter is under the supervision of interagency services, and official comments regarding possible steps will be provided going forward.
