BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Members of the public are being warned to make sure they get insurance from companies that have a proper license to operate in Louisiana.

According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, reports have come in that two groups marketed themselves as healthcare insurers in the state. However, officials said the two groups, Innovative Partners and LifeX Research, don’t actually have a license to sell or solicit health insurance in Louisiana.

Doctors, clinics, and hospitals will not recognize coverage from the two entities, state insurance officials said. They added that as a result, people who believed they purchased legitimate policies have had insurance cards rejected, leaving patients responsible for medical bills.

According to the state, multiple complaints have come in about Innovative Partners or LifeX Research.

People with concerns about insurance policies can contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance by calling the number 800-259-5300 x 3. You can also verify that a group has a proper license by using an online search tool from the state.

Officials said the groups currently authorized to operate in Louisiana are Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and Louisiana Blue, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, UnitedHealthcare, CHRISTUS Health Plan, and AmeriHealth Caritas Next.
