The US government has approved the sale of missiles to both Lithuania and the Netherlands for a combined USD414 million.

In two separate notifications posted on 21 April, the US Department of State (DoS) cleared the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) procurement of 168 (including 16 previously approved missiles that had been carried over from a previous approval) RTX AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles by Lithuania for USD214 million. It also approved 530 Lockheed Martin AGM-114R2 Hellfire II missiles for the Netherlands for USD200 million.

The DoS said of the Netherlands FMS that “the proposed sale will modernize the Netherlands’ armed forces, expand its capability to strengthen homeland defense, and deter regional threats. This enhanced capability will contribute to the Netherlands’ military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability.”

Both sales must first be approved by the US House of Congress before contracts can be awarded.
