Lithuania is procuring additional Saab Giraffe 1X radars from Swedish defence company Saab. The investment reflects a growing need to rapidly detect and manage threats in the airspace, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence in a press release.
According to Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas, the investment is based in part on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
“We are consistently strengthening Lithuania’s air defence and basing our decisions on the experiences from the war in Ukraine. The Saab Giraffe 1X radar system is mobile and can be rapidly deployed, effectively detects small objects, and provides 360-degree coverage as well as 3D tracking. The radar can also be well integrated with other defence systems and is resistant to jamming. In parallel, we are building an integrated air defence system, from detection to engagement and neutralisation,” said Robertas Kaunas.
The Saab Giraffe 1X is a compact 3D radar system that can be used both in military operations and to protect critical infrastructure. It was included, among other things, in the air defence agreement worth 8.7 billion Swedish kronor that Sweden signed with Saab and BAE Systems Bofors earlier in April.
In December 2025, Saab received an order worth 3 billion Swedish kronor from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence for RBS 70 Bolide missiles, with deliveries planned between 2028 and 2032.
