The Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, alongside its member organisations, will lead nationwide commemorations to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, with a series of events scheduled across Australia and New Zealand from May through to mid-June 2026.
The commemorative program will bring together Greek Australian and New Zealand communities to honour those who fought and fell during the pivotal World War II campaign.
A high-level delegation from the Hellenic Ministry of Defence will travel to the region between May 4 and May 25 to take part in official ceremonies and engagements.
The delegation will be led by Lieutenant General (P) Konstantinos Bouzos, Chief of Staff of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), and will include senior military and diplomatic representatives from Greece.
Accompanying him is Colonel Kyriakos Kyriakakos, Defence Attache of the Embassy of Greece in Canberra; First Lieutenant (ABDF) Eleni Theodorou, Head of the External Affairs Department of the Directorate of Public Relations at the HNDGS; and Staff Officer Lamprini Kokkori, International Affairs Directorate of the HNDGS.
The visiting officials are scheduled to attend events in Brisbane, Wellington, Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, underscoring the significance of the anniversary and the enduring ties between Greece, Australia and New Zealand forged during the war.
The national program features a mix of memorial services, wreath-laying ceremonies, official receptions and community events, including dinner dances hosted by local Cretan associations.

At 3pm, the Cretan Association of Queensland and the Honorary Consulate General of Greece in Brisbane will host a Battle of Crete Plaque Unveiling at the Holland Park – Mount Gravatt RSL Sub-Branch Shrine of Remembrance, 58 Arnold Street, Holland Park. Tea and coffee will be served following the unveiling at the RSL Sub-Branch Hall.
