Cold air will move into Latvia on Sunday and linger into next week. Forecasters warn that strong winds and precipitation are expected on Sunday.
On Saturday, the day of the Big Cleanup, skies will be mostly cloudy, with rain expected in many areas throughout the day. There will be little precipitation in the morning, with more rain in the afternoon and evening. A south-southwesterly wind will blow, shifting to a northwesterly wind in the evening; gusts of up to 12–17 metres per second are expected. The maximum air temperature will be +7 to +13 degrees Celsius.
On Saturday night, mainly along the coast, but during the day across the entire country, the northwesterly wind is expected to strengthen with gusts of 20–26 metres per second. Rain and snow are expected, with sleet in some areas; however, starting from the western part of the country, clouds will decrease, and the sun will shine. A temporary snow cover will form in parts of Latvia, and the air temperature on Sunday will not exceed +2 to +8 C.
On Monday, the weather will become sunnier, but gusts of north and northwest wind up to 20 metres per second will persist; brief precipitation is expected in some areas, with air temperatures remaining below +10 C.
The start and middle of next week will also be cold, with occasional brief rain, snow, and sleet expected. A gradual rise in temperatures is forecast for early May, but at night the thermometer may still drop below freezing in some areas.
Trees are expected to break during Sunday’s storm, with possible roof damage and other destruction. The most destructive wind gusts are forecast for Kurzeme, Zemgale, and western Vidzeme. On Sunday, Latvia may experience the most widespread wind damage since the storm of July 29, 2024; therefore, it is advisable to cancel all outdoor events and trips. Traffic may be hampered not only by falling trees and branches but also by snow and blizzards.
