Finland’s roundwood consumption amounted to 78.9 million solid cubic metres in 2025, up 3% from the previous year, with forest industry production accounting for 84% of the volume and the remainder used for energy production, according to Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

Roundwood processed in the forest industry totalled 66.1 million m3 in 2025, up 6%. Domestic sawlogs and pulpwood accounted for 62.6 million m3, up 6%, while imported wood totalled 3.5 million m3, down 9%.

Roundwood use for energy production totalled 12.8 million m3 in 2025, down 9%. Half of that volume was used in heat-only and CHP plants as forest chips produced from stemwood, and the other half was used as firewood in detached houses and on farms.

In addition to roundwood, forest industry by-product wood and various types of harvesting residues consumed totalled 24.3 million m3 in 2025, up 3%. Within forest industry production, domestic sawmill chips and sawdust use totalled 9.3 million m3, up 6%.

In energy production, total use of solid by-product and residue wood totalled 15.0 million m3 in 2025, up 1%. That included 2.7 million m3 of forest chips produced from logging residues and stumps burned in heat-only and CHP plants, and 10.4 million m3 of forest industry by-product wood, mainly bark, sawdust and industrial wood-residue chips.

The energy total also included 1.4 million m3 of recycled wood and wood pellets burned in heat and power plants, and 0.4 million m3 of recycled and by-product wood and wood pellets burned in detached houses.
