Four critically endangered mountain bongos, a type of antelope, arrived in Kenya after they were flown in from the Czech Republic, in what was billed as a “historic homecoming.”
The four males, who had been living at Dvur Kralove Zoo, arrived in a KLM cargo plane to a welcome ceremony at Nairobi’s main airport on Tuesday, April 28.
They were then transported to Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy to live with a “growing population” of 102 bongos, the Kenya Wildlife Service said.
“Their return is the result of years of planning under the National Recovery and Action Plan for the mountain bongo, and strong international collaboration,” the service said. Credit: Kenya Wildlife Service via Storyful
