In recent weeks, Iranian Embassies worldwide have been encouraging Iranians living abroad, “while wishing the warriors of Islam increasing success” and commending their “anti-enemy spirit,” to use the Iranian government’s existing Mikhak system,[1] which is used for governmental and consular services, to join the “Sacrifice Campaign,” whose purpose is “to realize the concrete will and national desire for popular defense of the land of Iran… all together, let us give our lives[, which is] better than giving the country to the enemy,” as the Iranian Embassy in London described the campaign on Telegram, according to the Telegraph.[2]

Screenshots obtained by the Telegraph from a Telegram channel of the Iranian Embassy in the UK.
Beyond that reporting, pages promoting the campaign have also appeared on the websites of the Iranian Embassies in Australia,[3] Italy,[4] Germany,[5] Switzerland,[6] Finland,[7] the Czech Republic,[8] and Belarus,[9] as well as in Iraq,[10] Azerbaijan,[11] Kuwait,[12] Malaysia,[13] South Africa,[14] Sri Lanka,[15] and Thailand.[16] The page on the Iranian Embassy in Finland features a graphic showing a man wearing a shirt bearing an emblem of the basij, a paramilitary volunteer force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). A tweet from the German Embassy features text that reads “Sacrifice One’s Life For Iran.”
In response to media coverage of the campaign, the Iranian Embassy in the UK said: “The Embassy wishes to underscore that the ‘Jan Fada [sacrifice]’ campaign is a purely symbolic and non-operational initiative, intended to reflect national solidarity, unity, and moral commitment among the Iranian people to the defence of their country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is an online and voluntary expression of patriotism and collective identity, and does not advocate or promote violence, self-harm, or unlawful activity, in the United Kingdom or elsewhere. Any attempt to portray this initiative as a security concern, or as an incitement to violent action, is categorically rejected.”[17]
It is not clear why Iranians in the diaspora would need to formally register with the government’s Mikhak system and give personal information for a campaign whose purpose was entirely “an online and voluntary expression of patriotism and collective identity.”

The campaign directs supporters to the Iranian government’s Mikhak system.
