An unusual aerial object raised alarms along Ukraine’s northern border as officials uncovered its potential purpose. The discovery points to evolving tactics that could complicate air defense efforts.
A balloon was carried into Ukraine from the territory of Belarus which, according to preliminary assessments, may function as a relay device to boost the signal of Russian drones.
The incident was reported by State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andriy Demchenko. According to him, such actions may be part of a broader Russian tactic in coordination with Belarus aimed at destabilizing the situation near Ukraine’s border.
The SBGS notes that it does not rule out the possibility of provocations in the northern direction. Initially, the object was detected as an unknown aerial target, but after clarification it was identified as a balloon launched from Belarusian territory.
According to available information, the device may be used to technically support Russian forces, in particular to improve communication during the use of aerial strike means.
“In essence, this is a relay device to strengthen the signal for aerial strike assets that Russia uses against Ukraine during attacks”

Situation on the border with Belarus
The day before, on May 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy drew attention to “specific activity” near the northern border, though without providing details.
Ukrainian border guards continue to closely monitor the situation and control the airspace in this region. According to them, any such incidents are promptly analyzed to assess potential threats.
At present, the situation on the border remains under control, and the relevant services are on heightened alert to respond to possible challenges.
